Walk the route with a tape measure. Behind one monitor is about four to six feet. The perimeter of a 48-inch desk is around twelve feet. The practical fix on any long run is to feed power near the middle rather than at one end, which halves the distance the current has to travel. If a kit ships with two rolls, treat them as two independent installs with their own supplies rather than trying to join them into one continuous run.

WiFi control adds scheduling, automation and voice assistants, at the cost of putting another device on your network with an account attached to it. A physical remote works when your phone is charging in another room, which is more often than you would think.

For a light you switch on every time you sit down, the fastest control method wins. Schedules are the genuinely useful smart feature — having the lighting ramp down through the evening rather than cutting from lit to dark is easier on your eyes than any manual routine you will actually maintain.

Every LED strip uses adhesive backing, and every adhesive backing eventually lifts, always at the corners and always above anything that generates heat. Preparing the surface properly is most of the fix: wipe it with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry completely, and press the strip down along its whole length rather than just at the ends.

For anything permanent, add mounting clips at corners and roughly every metre. They cost almost nothing and they are the difference between an install that lasts years and one you re-run next summer. Also unroll the strip and let it lie flat for an hour before mounting — coiled strip holds its curve and lifts at the bends.
